What Does a Casino Dealer Do?

Blackjack is a card game that requires skill and strategy. It is played by two players against the dealer and is one of the most popular casino games. It is also a very social game and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.

A casino dealer’s job involves greeting guests as they enter the establishment, updating them on the progress of the game and directing them to place wagers. A friendly dealer can make a game more enjoyable, while an unfriendly one can ruin the atmosphere of the table.

Some dealers have the opportunity to advance into management positions in a casino. They may become gaming managers, responsible for overseeing dealers and customer service staff. They may also be promoted to other roles that require more responsibility, such as a gaming director or manager of a casino floor.

Active Listening

Blackjack dealers practice active listening skills to enhance their customer service and improve their ability to communicate with guests. They may use nonverbal cues, such as nodding, to show they are giving undivided attention. They may also paraphrase the information they have been given to indicate that they understand it.

Dealer ‘Tells’

Blackjack players often try to read the dealer’s ‘tells’ in an attempt to increase their odds of winning. These tells are subconscious expressions or gestures that a dealer makes in the course of a game and can sometimes lead to a player advantage.

It is not always easy to find dealer tells, though. You may need to play at several tables before you can identify a dealer who is unconsciously giving away tells.

You should watch how the dealer holds his cards to see if they reveal any significant details. If the dealer reveals his hole card too quickly, it is probably a large stiff card or a face card.

Basic Strategy

A basic strategy is the optimal way to play a hand in blackjack. It allows players to minimize their long-term losses and maximize their chances of winning.

If you follow the basic strategy, the house edge in blackjack is usually less than 1% over the long run. However, deviations from this strategy can increase the house edge significantly.

The most common way to win in blackjack is by having a “blackjack” (an ace and any 10-point card). This hand beats any other hands that do not have a total of 21 points.

When a player has a blackjack, he wins immediately unless the dealer also has one, in which case the game is considered a push or standoff. If the dealer has a blackjack, then the player loses the original bet and any insurance that they have paid for.

Blackjack is a fast-paced game, so it is important to pay attention to what the other players are saying. You should ask them what they want to do and whether or not they are doubling down. If they are, then you should give them a bonus for doubling down.
