The objective of baccarat is to win a hand by guessing correctly which of three possible propositions will win on the next round: Bank, Player, or Tie. The players and the dealer each receive two cards, and whoever gets their hand closest to nine wins. The cards are dealt from a six- or eight-card shoe. The highest valued card is a 9, followed by a 10, and then a King, Queen, or Jack. All other cards are equal in value to their face.
Before the cards are dealt, each baccarat table has an area for the players to place their chips. The chips are placed on the Player, Banker or Tie bets. Players can adjust the size of their bets before each round and can also change them during a round. Each bet has different payouts and a different house edge. The Player bet pays out even money, while the Banker bet has a 1% lower house edge. The Tie bet, on the other hand, has a higher house edge and only pays out 8:1 (not including 5% commission) to winning players.
Once all the bets are made, the cards are dealt. The Player and the Banker each get two cards, and a third card may be drawn. If the total is 8, a third card is not drawn. If the total is 0 or 5, the Banker will draw a third card. If the total is 6 or 7, the player will stand and no third card will be drawn.
The cards are then analyzed, and the winner is determined by whose hand is closest to nine. If the hand is a 9, it wins; if it is a 10, it loses. In the event of a tie, the bets on the Banker and the Player are returned (no one wins or loses).
Baccarat is not a game that can be cheated on, but this is not to say there has never been cheating. Typically, cheating is done by the dealers rather than the players, as it is much easier to do so without being noticed. It is rare for players to cheat on the game, though. Baccarat is a low margin game that can be easily printed by the casino, so it is not worth the effort for players to cheat on it. However, this does not stop the players from trying to make a little extra drama in their game. They can do this by squeezing or bending the cards, for example. This adds a little excitement to the game, but it does not make any difference in the final result.
